Networking can seem somewhat complicated and ethereal to most people. What do you do first? How do you start a conversation? Especially online!
Fear not- I have 3 easy ways to get started, right now in building your network of amazing people.
When equipped with the right strategies, you are bound to connect and be at the right time and the right place to make some fantastic things happen.
The first thing you want to do when beginning to network online is some research. Make sure you are clear on what it is you actually need.
Are you planning a wedding? Are you trying to lose 30lbs? Are you looking for new friends to go to yoga and brunch with?
Maybe you are looking to move up in your current job and need a mentor or some advice. Maybe you are a stay at home Mom and want to hang out with other mothers. Maybe you just want to spend less time watching Netflix and more time dancing the night away.
Figure it out! Do some digging and when you are clear about what you want and what your needs and goals are, go to step 2.
The second thing to do when networking online is to make sure you are online in the first place and in the right place!
If you want to do more yoga, you should probably join some yoga Meetups on Meetup.com.
If you want to learn to salsa or bellydance, you should probably join some groups for that.
If you need to get certified in something for work, you should probably look up some certs online and find people on LinkedIn who can help.
If you want to get more one-on-one clients, you should probably be in the same Facebook groups as your potential clients.
Catch my drift?
It’s all about positioning yourself properly to get the results you are looking for. No need to waste time loligagging in the wrong groups or getting notifications or invites to things you don’t want to see.
Lastly, in order to network online effectively without hurting your head, you want to start saying YES.
When you get that e-mail saying there is a networking event for IT or healthcare professionals downtown this Thursday, say YES. Start agreeing to go out and DO things to physically put yourself in front of people.
Maybe you’re invited to an online webinar on juicing or building a following on Pinterest. Join it! And then show up when it happens. Interact with people who also show up online and BOOM: new connections.
Start. Saying. Yes.
If these seem too difficult or daunting, get an accountability partner or someone who will keep you to your word.
If you need help with getting the clarity from step 1, or finding the right groups from the second tip, or you feel weird saying YES instead of hiding in the dark- hit me up. I’d be glad to help you.
